Helical-wound radials for vertical antenna |

I am trying to fit a 4 band HF vertical into a very tight space. It is mounted on top of a 5m high pole. I was going to use 4 elevated radials but there is no room to fan them out. My thought is to helically wind them on to a pieces of PVC pipe attached to the base of the antenna. I think there are some commercially-built verticals that have similar radials (CP6?).
What say ye!

FTdx5000 Data I/O ? |

Hi All,
I have just took delivery of a new FTDX-5000 Limited after using the good ol'e FT-847.
I use a SignalLink as my interface into the 847 when using RTTY, PSK, ... via it's rear panel Data Port.
Now, the 5000 has two possibles, it has a port for Packet and a port for RTTY.
The manual is not real clear on what port to use when using multi-mode interfaces.
I'm guessing the Packet ???

Rumour of a new Yaesu FT818 1.8 to 440 mhz rig possibly to be on show at tokyo ham fair august 2018
Imagine a SDR ft818 the size of the 817?
There is some stuff about it on the net if you dig deep
If it is real and not fake news, this could replace the FT817 that was released in 2001/2
Maybe on show at tokyo ham fair in august 2018 ?

WIA enquiry, complaint and request management system |

We live in an age of digital transformation. An age of moving paper-based processes to electronic processes. An age of organisations providing 24x7 self-service digital delivery. This all helps to improve service levels.
Over the past few months the team at the WIA office have been trialling an enquiry, complaint and request management system that will provide members with better service and better status updates.
A system that will also enable self-service, 24x7 via an online portal. This means you can check the details of your WIA enquiry or respond to clarifications 24 hours a day, seven days a week without needing to wait for when you can call the office.
After successful initial trials, a broader trial is now underway where selected WIA enquiries and requests will be managed in the new system. As a member, if your enquiry is selected as a trial case, it will mean you will be sent automatic email updates, and a link to your enquiry so that you can manage your enquiry 24x7 via the website.
Now, this doesn't mean that the office hours are changing, or that the phones will have any less support. The offices contact methods are not being reduced, rather they are being expanded. Privacy and security is important to the WIA and depending on the type of enquiry only relevant staff or volunteers will be able to see the details of your enquiry. Also, we are aware that not all members have reliable access to the internet, so we will continue to provide services in a way that means you will not have to use the new system if you cant, instead it will be used to compliment your experience if you do have access.
WIA staff and WIA volunteers will all now have a better understanding of how enquiries and requests are progressing. It will also highlight common queries or issues giving us an opportunity to address them in a more broader sense. In summary, it will help the WIA deliver a better service.
A big thanks to Aidan Mountford VK4APM, Petra and Bruce for making this all happen. Feedback is, of course, welcome.
This has been David Ford, VK4MZ.

Buy: 2SC1971 transistor |

I know eBay lists 2SC1971 transistors but most are probably fakes, and taking 3 weeks or so to discover whether it is a fake does not enthuse me.
What I am wanting to buy is a "real" new 2SC1971 device, a 175MHz TO220 device as used as a pre-driver in some Icom transceivers.
The direct equivalent is an NTE342 and that would suffice.
I am awaiting a reply from Icom re price and availability, but in the meantime, have any Forum members got one to spare (P&A please) ??

I received a direct email yesterday with a link to the WIA's 2018 AGM registration / booking page: https://www.wia.org.au/joinwia/wia/2018agm/
I don't know if the email went to all WIA members or just selected ones but I would be interested to know. The thing is that it was sent my non-AR email address, i.e. one that is not registered with the WIA, so why that one ???
The body of the email is as below:
"The WIA is pleased to announce that registrations are now open for the 2018 WIA Radio and Electronics Convention and AGM. You can register today via the online registration form on the WIA website via this Link
The 2018 WIA Radio and Electronics Convention and AGM is being held at the SeaWorld Resort on Queensland's Gold Coast. The venue is located in the heart of the Gold Coast, with easy access from the airport and to a wide range of hotel accommodation and with parking nearby.
For those arriving at the Gold Coast on Friday evening the traditional informal dinner and get together is being held at Fisherman's Wharf Tavern, which is located near Sea World on Main Beach. The evening meal will be of your choice and budget.
On Saturday morning at 9am the formal WIA AGM and Open Forum will take place in SeaWorld's conference centre. This important event will be followed by an eye opening afternoon program themed "Beyond 2020”. A commemorative activity to launch the armistice is to be announced by the WIA.
The afternoon program will include guest speakers presenting on some cutting edge technologies as well as a range of strategy workshops providing members with the opportunity to share their views and ideas for the shaping the future of the WIA beyond 2020. Saturday will also offer a range of relaxing activities for the partners including Sea World tours and an opportunity to visit some of Australia’s largest shopping centres.
At 7pm on Saturday evening the traditional WIA Annual Dinner will take place. The dinner is being held at SeaWorld's Shoreline Restaurant, featuring the restaurants signature seafood buffet. During the evening guests will be privileged to hear from Jeff Johnson VK4XJJ as he talks to us about his walk across Australia with Amateur Radio. Partners and friend are invited to join in the WIA Annual Dinner, seats are available for just $85 per person. (Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase on the night.)
On Sunday morning consider trying something different, and join us for an early morning Champagne and Breakfast Hot Air Balloon Ride. Consider taking your radio with you and discover how far for you can work from such heights. Sunday morning will also feature tours of the Queensland Telecommunications Museum, a tour of the Surf Life Saving Command Centre, plus a variety of demonstrations and displays of Amateur Radio equipment. There will be a Microwave shootout, talks on a range of interesting topics plus displays of latest radio equipment by some of our leading commercial suppliers.
And last but not least, for those not traveling back to their home QTH on Sunday afternoon, you are invited to join us for a free BBQ dinner courtesy of the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society.

John Moyle Field Day 17th-18th March 2018 |

Aim Of The Contest
The aim is to encourage and provide familiarisation with portable and field operation, and provide training for emergency situations. The rules are therefore specifically designed and focussed to encourage field operations.
The next Field Day will be held over the weekend of the 17th-18th March 2018 and will run from UTC 0100 on the Saturday to 0059 on the Sunday.
{ The contest rules will remained modified to ensure more logs are submitted, by requiring that if any station works the same station a total of more than 10 times on any band or on any mode then the logs from both station should be submitted to verify those contacts. }
Full Rules and Details : http://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/johnmoyle/
Contest History
The contest is run each year in memory of the late John Moyle who was a long term editor of the Wireless Weekly, (later Radio & Hobbies - later Radio Television & Hobbies) from 1947 until his untimely death in 1960. He served in the RAAF with distinction and was responsible for a number of innovative solutions to keeping radio and radar equipment working under difficult wartime and working conditions. The WIA decided that a suitable long term memorial to John Moyle would be a Field Day with a focus on portable or field operation. The contest has been conducted annually ever since.
The rules of the contest have gradually changed over time and are still revised regularly.
The contest is still for portable or field operators, though Home stations can of course take part using a different scoring system.
Though Multiple Operators and club stations are actively encouraged to take part in the contest they are not competing against the single operator stations and in effect there are two separate contests run at the same time. Hence single operator stations take part in their own contest against other single operators.
Contest Rules
The contest is open to all VK, ZL and P2 stations. All other stations are welcome to participate, but can only claim points for contacts with VK, ZL and P2 stations. All VK, ZL and P2 stations can claim points for all contacts, with any station in the world, as long as valid serial numbers are exchanged. 00
Single operator portable entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 6 hour, phone, VHF/UHF):
a 24 or 6 hour;
b Phone, CW, Digital or All modes;
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.
Multi-operator portable entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 24 hour, phone, VHF/UHF):
a 24 or 6 hour;
b Phone, CW, Digital, or All modes;
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.
Home entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 24 hour, phone, VHF/UHF):
a 24 or 6 hour;
b All modes;
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.
Multi operator stations are not permitted in the Home Category.
If any Station works the same station more than 10 times on any band, or using any mode, they should submit their own log to verify those contacts for the other station.
Visit the WIA web site for the full details about definitions, logging, submitting logs etc..

Good luck all...

Trans-Tasman 60m (5MHz) Band access trial
NZART is pleased to announce that it has negotiated with RSM and the NZ Defence Force to obtain a licence to allow limited operation by ZL amateur operators on 60m on a trial basis.
The purpose of the trial is for RSM, NZART and primary users to investigate the ability for the amateur radio operators to operate on the frequencies of operation on a secondary basis without causing interference to primary users.
As the licence is held by NZART and does not currently include 60m, those wishing to operate in this band in ZL will need to apply to the NZART for permission.
Operation centres on 5353 kHz and 5362 - 5364 kHz with a maximum output of 10 dBW e.i.r.p.
