Rumour of a new Yaesu FT818 1.8 to 440 mhz rig possibly to be on show at tokyo ham fair august 2018
Imagine a SDR ft818 the size of the 817?
There is some stuff about it on the net if you dig deep
If it is real and not fake news, this could replace the FT817 that was released in 2001/2
Maybe on show at tokyo ham fair in august 2018 ?

The confidentially release date above maybe coincides with the ham fair in august .....as if it is on display , it will not be "confidential "any more...
The usa style date above indicates 6th august 2018

I guess many were expecting more from the 818.
The max output power is possible only at 13.8V which rules out running off the internal battery. In that regard it's no different to the 817 which has a similar limitation. In many cases I'm not sure what the extra power would do unless you needed that extra little bit to drive an amp to full output.
TCXO and battery are things that an 817 user can overcome reasonably easy with after market options. However, it is good to see that the TCXO is finally standard rather than optional.
60m? Well for VK I think we'll have a while to wait before that is useful.
Yaesu probably would have been better off calling it FT817X or V2 or MkII or something rather than FT818 which kind of gave the sense that we might be in for something astoundingly different.
The good news is that this radio remains in production.
