Ozy Radio, from the Campbelltown area south west of Sydney, is currently off air. They are moving to 4.935MHz AM.
Start up date unknown.
Meanwhile the 4KZ Innisfail relay on 5.055MHz AM is still active, although very weak most of the time here.
Radio Vanuatu still off air on 7.260MHz AM owing to blown finals in the Port Vila transmitter, will be back on air when replacement finals arrive and installed.
Radio Happy Isles (SIBC) in Honiara, Solomon Islands on 5.020MHz AM was off air the last couple of nights for reasons unknown too.
Heaps of good African loggings to be found 4 to 7MHz in the early hours to sunrise, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Botswana, Nigeria and Liberia all noted this week plus India (AIR) as well as some relays of prominent broadcasters (BBC etc) from Mauritius and Middle Eastern sites.

Signal reports in Contests a waste of time! |

When are we going to get rid of signal reports in contests (and on dxpeditions)? A station asks you to repeat your call five times and still gives you 59 when it is plainly obvious that the "real"report is nothing like that. Wasting breath, wasting time and telling lies - hardly good operating practice!
I tried to give out correct reports in this weekend contest and got remarks like "cmon give me S9" and "you mean S9."
Lets just drop the requirement for signal reports unless a station specifically asks for one.
Off soapbox, need to take my medication!

ASA Mount Boyce Radar |

The Sydney Airport approach radar at Mount Boyce, between Blackheath and Mount Victoria, in the Blue Mountains of NSW hasn't been operating for over one month now. I drive past the site on a regular basis.
The BOM Weather Station at Mount Boyce, in the same compound as the radar, is still operating.
No mention on the Air Services Australia web site as to why the radar is either decommissioned or not working. Possibly it has something to do with the rationalisation of NavAids in relation to GPS navigation?
Any air buffs know what the Mount Boyce situation is? Thanks...Jack VK2XQ.

Bird slug reads high |

Hi All,
What do you think would make a bird slug read high?
Slug is a 50D - 200MHz to 500MHz. The test setup is proven, two meters in series connected to a Termaline load with meter.
Meter tested ok with known good slugs.
Slug behaves badly in known good meter.
Slug reads FSD (hard over!) in the FWD direction.
Slug can be adjusted to make sensible readings when rotated to reverse. I think this is pointless.
Terminating resistor and diode replaced, trimpot works ok, no dirty spots, smooth adjustment.
I don't know the answer but what do you think would make a bird slug read high?

Getting back on HF in restricted space |

So... after a long hiatus, I've decided I need something for HF.
I used to have plenty of space to pop up HF wire antennas, not so anymore. I'm restricted to a space of about 25 metres in my backyard, perhaps slightly more with an inverted V.
The antenna location would be mounted on a mast (probably around 6 metres above ground) immediately above and parallel to my 9m long shed (so perhaps some interaction with open feeder type designs might cause issues).
I've had a look at the Western HF10 - and heard good reports about it, especially for low noise (important here in the suburbs). Also looked at the ZS6BKW.
I've also looked at a trap dipole design, if I can build traps out of coax, or similar (I got a bit of RG316 a while back for such a job).
Primary bands I'd like are 80m, 40m, 20m.
160m and 10m would be a bonus (especially 1.8MHz, a band I'd like to play with).
Thoughts? What can I build?
Regards
Hayden

Remote antenna change |

I am going to put wire extension on my 10-80m Hustler trapped vertical so I can use it on 160m. Reports are that it works OK but it mucks up the tuning on 80m.
I am thinking about installing a small module with a latching relay on the 80m resonator so that I can disconnect and reconnect the wire as needed. I don't want to run any control wires up the antenna so I am thinking of using a 433MHz remote system. It would have to be low current draw because I want to use a small battery to power it at the top end.
Worthwhile idea or am I delusional?

2017/2018 Summer DX Season |

The just passed summer DX season was one of the worst I have experienced on 50MHz, only real DX I heard was the E51USA beacon in the Cook Islands plus some very weak South Americans working into VK4 on two occasions.
Even the interstate summer paths were limited, heard/worked VK6 three times and heard VK8 (Darwin) twice.
Usually the VK8RAS Alice Springs beacon comes in for hours during past summers, seldom heard this time around, likewise the Atherton and Townsville beacons, both down in signal strength and very short paths. Last summer on a few occasions I had the Atherton beacon in and out for hours, not so this time.
Not a single path to Asia this way, didn't even hear the 49.750MHz Asian TV at all, a sure sign indicator of F2 lacking.
Plenty of ZL openings plus the FK8SIX beacon, however, compared to last 2016/2017 season the FK8 path was lacking and short openings if any.
