This year’s Redfest is doing things a little differently!

Ladies! We are trying to look after the ladies in our lives as well as the ladies on-air with their own callsigns. As such, Redfest 2024 will feature non-radio related tables focussed purely on female interest areas. There will also be a specialty café with proper coffees, cakes, slices and cookies, along with sit-down café tables under the club marquee. Very civilized! ALARA will also have a presence this year to encourage more ladies to take up this great hobby of ours. So, invite the ladies along this year! (My XYL is coming!)

Technical! For those who want to expand their technical knowledge, there will be a demonstration of the ICOM IC-905, the new commercially made microwave transceiver. The Brisbane VHF Group will also be there to do a Tech Talk on microwave propagation.

Prizes! Raffle prizes are always attractive items at Redfest and this year is even better with the ICOM ID-5100A VHF/UHF FM and digital transceiver as the main prize. There will also be minor prizes as well as hourly lucky door draws.

And as usual! Yes, all your favourite stalls full of pre-loved goodies along with our regular commercial sellers will be there too! Did I mention Dougie’s famous bacon and egg rolls? Yep, the BBQ will be running hot as always.

Food available from 8:00am and the gates are open to the bargains from 9:00am. Major prize draw is at 11:00am. Entry is $5.00 and raffle tickets are also $5.00 (can be purchased prior to the day – see the club website).

Plus I have to return the favour of Iain VK5ZD of his big effort in coming to the Ballarat Hamvention last weekend with his microwave gear to display and help recruit some newbies.
- Would there be a few microwave operators be interested in heading out to work some microwave bands in the days before and/or after? I was thinking of making a week of it - any excuse to make an escape from lockdown central in VK3.
- I'll have all bands from 2m to 10GHz (inc 3.4G) and maybe by late this year I could have 24GHz ready as well.

With the help of others, I’m planning on setting up a promotional display of microwave gear for attendees to see with the intent of attracting more people to microwave radio operations. Yes, there is life beyond 10metres. I’ll also be promoting the VK3RBA linked network… VK3RBA QRZ page  as well as Amateur Radio Victoria who maintain many of the repeaters around Victoria… Amateur Radio Victoria
 
I’ve already received offers of assistance from a few BARG members and Amateur Radio Victoria are committed to assist. I’m waiting to hear back from a manufacturer from Japan to see if they’re interested in being involved as well.  
 
I’ve booked two tables worth of space and if anyone was interested in bringing along and displaying their microwave gear, including antennas, to bring them along to display. It would be great if you could also print out an A4 sized sign on who’s it is and what it is and attach it to your equipment. I’ve booked a GPO for the stand, therefore if you wish to power up your gear, bring along a small power supply and plug it in. The display area will predominantly taped off so that hands-on access will be restricted, but close enough to enable attendees to see the equipment, method of construction, etc and maybe gather some clues & ideas of how to go about it and where to get the bits to build a system. The display will be supervised at all times. There may also be an opportunity to do some live testing from a test station outside to a couple of systems inside the building, including a test ATV broadcast link.
 
None of the displayed gear will be for sale – it is purely to help promote microwave radio and attract some more people to get involved – more contacts for the rest of us.
 
So if you’re interested in bringing some gear along to show and encourage others, let me know so that I can plan the display.

Dayton Hamvention Signs 5-Year Contract with Greene County Expo Centre.  This agreement keeps Dayton Hamvention at the Greene County Expo Centre and the agreement was announced by Hamvention General Chairman Jack Gerbs, WB8SCT.

It has been a wonderful experience working with the Expo Centre team in the development of this agreement, Gerbs said. With the 5-year agreement signed, the Expo Centre and Hamvention can move forward with additional enhancements to the facilities.

Dayton Amateur Radio Association President Ron Cramer, KD8ENJ, said the DARA Board, in approving the contract, noted that the relationship with the Expo Centre and Greene County, the City of Xenia, and Xenia Township has proven especially rewarding. Cramer said, They all have worked hard to make Hamvention a success over the last 3 years. We look forward to a great relationship over the next 5 and beyond.
