Undoubtedly, the wider amateur fraternity will miss Mike’s particular skills, especially those contesters who have benefitted from his logging programs over the past 20 years and log-checking software in more recent years.

Mike was an enthusiastic supporter of the VHF-UHF Field Days, especially joining the multi-operator team of VK3ER from the Eastern and Mountain District Amateur Radio Club in Melbourne, where he was a member.

Personally, I worked with Mike when he stepped-up to the plate to support the WIA VHF-UHF Field Days in 2014 after I was 'awarded' the task of managing them. I met him at one of the GippsTech Conferences (now in suspension due to the Covid pandemic situation).

John was really the reason I took up the hobby of amateur radio. His family lived in the next street to ours and I was interested in short-wave. Almost every time he came 'on-air' and I heard him on my receiver, I ran around to his place and watched him working DX on 20M AM from his shack doorway, 4 x 866A mercury vapour rectifiers glowing purple, and a Geloso VFO into a homebrew transmitter plus a wartime BC348 receiver doing the heavy lifting. He subsequently nicknamed me his "on-air monitor". This was about 1963 or 1964, and I was encouraged enough to obtain my Z-call in 1967. I periodically caught up with John in person in early years following that, only on-air in later years and he always seemed pleased to hear from me and usually commented on those very early times.

John's activity as a Net Controller in the ANZA Net on 14183/4 over recent years has probably been the point where most current people became aware of him.

Unfortunately, I only became aware of his change to SK in the OTN news broacast yesterday, 6 April 2020.

Peggy Sue Gerron, ex-K5PSG, SK

ARRL reports Peggy Sue Gerron, ex-K5PSG, of Lubbock, Texas, who inspired singer Buddy Hollys 1957 rockabilly hit Peggy Sue, died on October 1. She was 78

First licensed in 2004 as KE 5 AKW, she later obtained the vanity call K 5 PSG. Her license expired in 2014, and K5PSG has since been reissued.

Peggy Sue went to high school with Buddy Holly and later married The Crickets drummer, Jerry Allison. As rock n roll history has it, Holly originally titled the song Cindy Lou, but Allison convinced the singer to change the tunes name to Peggy Sue.

After Hollys death in 1959, Peggy Sue toured with The Crickets after the band got back together. Over the years, she made public and media appearances all over the country.

She said her participation in the 2004 W 5 B special event in Lubbock commemorating Holly, helped inspire her Amateur Radio aspirations.

You can do TV specials, and you can be interviewed by the very best DJs, she said, but there is nothing like the feeling of putting your finger down, and transmitting your call sign, and having somebody answer back.
