I am checking FMBC from Australia by MROFFT software these days.
And found from Mount Isa have the carrier-like signal on 107.3MHz.
It is very useful to check weak TEP path but only 107.3 have it for a long time.
(I could see it on 106.5 too but it did'nt continue long time)

107.3 carrier-like signal continues long time but sometimes stops.
I can't find go and stop pattern yet.

The attached file shows a good sample when the carrier-like signal was cut off halfway through.

Why 107.3 have carrier-like signal on FM mode.
And why no others?

I guess in Australia uses a different FM broadcast modulation method than JA.

If I might ask, do we really need or still want the Emerald Hill beacons?

Reason for asking is that I've been paying the power bills for the past few years, and with rising energy costs it's only getting more expensive.
I think it came to $1200 last year, so it's not exactly cheap, and it's only heading north.

Unfortunately, the current location doesn't lend itself to solar + battery solutions, but there is another location within 5km that's a similar elevation and accessible which might be suitable - and viable if demand is there. Of course I would need to come up with a costed solution that was "reasonable" to existing hams that have an interest in seeing the beacons remain in service, assuming that they would be willing to donate something to the cause. The alternative is to motivate the VK1's to finish improvements to their site at Isaac's Ridge, and I would be open to donating to such a cause if it still exists.

If anyone is able to set up beacons at Esperance WA (VK6) that would be much appreciated by many on the east side of Australia. It is not only within a single Sporadic E hop for some, but also tropo signals are always possible and more likely than Albany. CW or WSPR would be preferred, or both even better.
VHF in southern Australia is at a great loss without this beacon site. So just throwing the idea out there in case someone or a group is able to rectify this situation.
As a memory refresher, this is some of what I used to enjoy here, Esperance is 2313 km from me -

After some years off air, this beacon is now operational again on 50.049 carrier frequency (+- temperature related drift).

It is working on a 'semi-intermittent' basis into Warwick's 6m Yagi ... e.g. the beacon is running when he is not on 6m himself.

Some 'last minute' things still to attend to:
Changing the ID to read Warwick's new locator - BI01xa (it is still sending his old locator - BI00xx)
Upgrading the solar power system with items on hand to improve reliability and protect the battery

fast beacon keyer

Hello,

I have written firmware for fast beacon keyer for mega16. With 16Mhz xtal it sends a message
at 4400bps in about 20mS. This needs vhf radio with asynchronous FSK link. The idea is to find
out how often short burst tropo exists over ocean path (if it does). Tropo signals are strong
signals and only about 50watts of power is required; but the FSK link performance probably
depends a great deal on transmit deviation setting.

www.qsl.net/zs1agx/mega16/keyr003.html

Experiment with signal polarization over ocean path is also of interest.

This keyer needs a serial connection at 19200bps to display received text. The keyer has a selcall
counter to count number of valid beacon detects. The message is sent as delay modulated varicode so
the FSK works at any fixed phase shift and has no DC component.

It has a long Ident each 10 Mins that can help you find it.

Even if no one is around, it is stil handy for checking your own 23CM signal.
Also plays back your data modes, eg SSTV works well.
Give it a Go sometime.

The VK4RTT beacon is back on air from Mt Coot-tha, Brisbane, on 144.440 as of yesterday, 12 March, 2022.

It transmits 3 CW IDs, straight carrier then a JT4D sequence.

To decode JT4D on WSJT-X, you need to enable the box marked "Enable VHF and submode features" in File/Setup. (Thanks Peter VK5PJ !)
Select JT4 from the Mode menu then set Submode to D from the options box to the right of the FTol box.

I manually set the radio to 144.438500/USB to get the 1500Hz tones required on the waterfall and to decode.

Hi all,

I suspect that the VK4RTT beacon, 144.440, is operating from Redcliffe clubrooms rather than its normal location in the Bunya Mts. That's fine. What I would like to know is what RF power it is currently operating at and the antenna type in use.

I can just hear it from the home QTH (about 60kms) on an 11el horizontal yagi but it is really quite weak - hence the question.

Anybody have up-to-date info ??

Thanks
Doug

PS I have already seen the VKLogger beacon data but I suspect that the antenna there refers to the Mt Mowbullan configuration.

I see by the latest Beacon list that the 70cm brother of the above beacon is gps locked. Is the 2m one also gps locked? The list indicates it is not but I am hoping it's a typo
It's the only one I can hear, faintly unfortunately but it is always there.
